Here's a comprehensive guide to help you get the most out of your KoMo device.
General Guidelines for Milling and Flaking:
- Avoid Oily, Fatty, or Moist Foods: Refrain from processing nuts, oily seeds (like flaxseeds or poppy seeds), or moist grains, as they can clog the grinding stones.
- Use Cleaned Grains: Ensure your grains are free from residues such as small stones to prevent damage to the grinding stones.
- Process Only Dry Grains: Moist grains can cause the grinding stones to stick together. To test for dryness, press a grain with a spoon on a smooth surface; if it splinters, it's dry enough. If it crushes like oatmeal, it's too moist.
- Experiment with Small Quantities: If unsure about a particular grain, process a small amount first. Afterward, check the stones for any sticking. If they do stick, clean them by grinding coarse rice or using a dry wire brush.
- Select Appropriate Motor Strength: Not all motors can handle every grain. Consider what you plan to process and choose a mill with suitable engine strength.

- Wheat, spelt, rye, kamut, emmer, einkorn, barley, green spelt, oats (milled coarsely, not finely).

- Millet, corn (avoid popcorn varieties), buckwheat, brown millet, quinoa, amaranth (not on the finest setting), rice (natural rice, avoid parboiled rice), rosehip seeds.

- All roasted coffee beans. Note: Grinding coffee can impart flavors to the millstones; consider using interchangeable millstones.

- Grains: Oats without husks (naked oats) are ideal. Other grains can be briefly moistened, allowed to dry for a few hours, and then flaked. This process yields better flakes that are easier to digest.
- Seeds and Spices: You can experiment with various seeds or spices, but avoid nuts or legumes, as they are too hard for flaking.

- Freshness Matters: Freshly flaked oats should be consumed immediately, as they can quickly lose valuable nutrients and become bitter when stored.
